GOW, A.S.F. and D.L. PAGE, (eds.), The Greek Anthology. I. Hellenistic Epigrams. Volume I. Introduction and Text. Volume II. Commentary and indexes. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1965. 2 vols. L,264;719p. Original blue cloth. Spine gilt titled. Head and tail spine slightly bumped. Cover slightly scratched and with some vague stains. Small personal library mark and name on free endpaper. Some upper corners pages deliberately creased. Some scholarly annotations by KJD, mostly in red pen. Vol.2: small hole in back cover. Still a nice copy. 'The work is devoted to almost 5,000 lines of Hellenistic poetry which had remained so far (...) devoid of any adequate commentary. Not only Alexandrinists but all students of Greek literature are heavily indebted to the editors, who have produced an outstanding piece of scholarship. Professor Page has concentrated his attention on Meleager, whose poems are analysed, with penetrating acumen, in their literary background and the allusiveness of their diction (...). Mr. Gow has dealt with the rest of the epigrammatists, a task of immense labour. He has elegantly solved, or soberly reassessed, numberless problems relating to text, 'Realien', and diction. (...). The two editors must be warmly congratulated on the publication of this work, which is not only monumental in size but also Bentleina in quality.' (GIUSEPPE GIANGRANDE in The Classical Review (New Series), 1967, p.17-24). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover. € 250.00 (Antiquarian)
