Die Nomarchen des Arsinoites. Ein Beitrag zum Steuerwesen im römischen Ägypten.
Ferdinand Schöningh, Paderborn (...), 2004. X,367,IXp. Sewn. Wrps. Series: Abhandlungen der Nordrhein-Westfälischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Sonderreihe Papyrologica Coloniensia, Vol. XXXI. Nice copy. 'This book, the first full study of the 'nomarchia', not just the nomarchs, of the Arsinoite nome in the Roman period, is the most important contribution to our knowledge of taxation in Roman Egypt since S.L. Wallace, 'Taxation in Egypt from Augustus to Diocletian (1938). A brief introduction reviews the available evidence and previous scholarly views. The second chapter gives a prosopographical study of the 27 Arsinoite nomarchs attested between A.D. 34 and 248, and the next investigates their function. The fourth chapter (pp.92-299) (...) is a detailed discussion of all the taxes due in Arsinoite to the 'nomarchia' and what is known about their collection, including comparison with their evidence and mode of collection in other nomes. Attempts to come to grips with the ghastly complexities of taxation in Roman Egypt at ground level are rare and especially welcome. A hazard of the job, and reason for the unpopularity of the topic, is that for each point clarified two new problems tend to emerge, but that is still valuable progress. (...) R.'s discussion of each tax and its collection is based on meticulous analysis and discussion of the relevant texts, clearly presented and written. It is not an easy read, but it will be the invaluable reference point for any editor or historian needing to know about these taxes.' (DOMINIC RATHBONE, The classical review (New Series), 2007, pp.490-91). From the library of the late Professor Doktor Nikolaus Himmelmann.
