Preisshofen a consacrée à la représentation de la vieillesse dans l’épopée et le lyrisme archaïques vient utilement combler un vide. L’étude, menée avec beaucoup de soin, comprend deux parties de longueur inégale: la première, de loin la plus brève, analyse la vieillesse dans la mythologie(thème de l’éternel jeunesse des dieux (….)); la deuxième tente de déterminer comment les poètes, d’Homère à Pindare, ont perçu la vieillesse. (…) Si je ne partage pas le sentiment de l’auteur qui voudrait atténuer la part du pessimisme qui émane des fragments lyriques qu’il étudie, je crois qu’il a raison d’insister (…0 sur l’ambivalence que les poètes archaïques ont reconnue à la vieillesse. (…) Les quelques divergences qui me séparent de M. Preisshofen ne m’empêchent nullement de considérer que son livre constitue une contribution de qualité à l’étude d’un thème littéraire essentiel. The main emphasis is naturally on the commentary, but Radt has made a careful collation of the papyri, and pp.1-12 give a useful survey of the problems they present. On left-hand pages facing the text is a transcript of the papyri, with complete record of accents and punctuation marks and an apparatus of doubtful readings. (...) The scholia are edited separately, devided and numbered as in Drachmann, and with an apparatus of their own. A translation precedes the commentary. This is on a large scale (...) and is certainly exhaustive. That is only rarely exhausting as well is due to the editor's marked powers of clear and orderly exposition. He displays an intimate familiarity with his author and a thorough command of the relevant literature which make his notes continuously informative and interesting; he sets out the views of his predecessors fairly and fully (...); his own judgements are clear and independent; and he certainly supersedes all previous treatments of these poems.' Verdenius 'says (...) that the 'hyper-interpretation' of the new critics needs to be pruned away, and the best way to do it is by a detailed commentary on one particular poem. The 'Seventh Olympian' is suitable (...). Verdenius's commentary is almost wholly exegetic. He is concerned to explain the meaning of the Greek, and of course to point out the occasions when other scholars have misunderstood it. The objects of his disagreement include recent translators of Pindar (lattimore, Ruck and Matheson, Bowra) as well as Young and Smith. (...) He quotes widely from all sorts of sources, and this brief commentary on one ode is a fine exeample of Dutch scholarship. Verdenius is impressively sure of his opinions, and most of the time clearly right, so that the reading of his notes is simultaneously interesting and instructive.' (M.M.
