JEUDY, Colette, and Y.-Fr. RIOU,
Les manuscrits classiques latins des bibliothèques publiques de France. Catalogue établi. Tome I. Agen - Évreux.
Édition du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris, 1989. XXVIII,786,XXIVp. ills.(B&W photographs). Original light yellow cloth. 'The public libraries of France have large and significant holdings of manuscripts, and it is admirable that through government-funded Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique resources are made available for the compilation and publication of catalogues. (...) The catalogue entries - your reviewer is not acquainted at first hand with any of the manuscripts catalogues and must leave it to others to judge their accuracy - seem admirable; concise and informative physical descriptions; detailed descriptions of all texts - no matter how small - contained, with incipits and explicits and references to standard editions; notes on the places of writing; apparently exhaustive provenance descriptions, many of them perhaps reaching too far into modern times to be relevant to establishing the lines of transmission byt certainly of interest for the history of book collecting; and bibliography. (...) The indexes - especially the Index des auteurs et textes (pp.652-723) and the Incipitaire (pp.724-80) - are fundamental to the use of this catalogue and ensure that all the information collected can be easily exploited.' (BRIAN HILLYARD in The Classical Review (New Series), 1991, p.268). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux.
