'Action' is here the key word: Fredal wants to shift the emphasis from what he call 'enthymematic rhetoric', i.e. 'that intricate species of discourse that attended to the course of thoughts in the listener' (p.33), to rhetoricas performance, icluding all the symbolic, bodily and topographical features that endowed rhetoric with meaning. Gorgias (480-380 vC) is een van de grondleggers van de retorica. Hij was een rondtrekkend retoricus en filosoof, beroemd en berucht om zijn ingenieuze redeneringen en zijn elliptische en poëtische stijl. De macht van het woord is volgens Gorgias niet enkel toe te schrijven aan rationele argumentatie: ook het bespelen van gevoelens is van het grootste belang. Beheersing van verstand en gevoel is daarom de voorwaarde voor een effectieve retorische techniek. Plato maakte hem tot prototype van de sofisten en kritiseerde hem en zijn methode in de dialoog Gorgias. In de Helena en de Palamedes gebruikt Gorgias met opzet overbekende mythische verhalen en figuren zodat zijn redeneringen door iedereen precies gevolgd kunnen worden. Zijn Over het niet-zijnde of over de natuur, dat slechts gedeeltelijk bewaard is gebleven, is te beschouwen als een tot in het extreme doorgevoerde kritiek op Parmenides' filosofie, dat alles wat wij waarnemen slechts schijn is.
