Die Redetrias vor der sizilischen Expedition (Thukydides 6,9 - 23).
Anton Hain, Meisenheim am Glan, 1977. 197p. Sewn. Small personal library mark, name as well as author’s dedication (glued in) on free endpaper. Series: Beiträge zur klassischen Philologie, Band 91.'This book is a detailed scrutiny, section by section, of the three speeches which stand at the beginning of Thucydides’ account of the Sicilian Expedition. The apparatus of modern scholarship – diagrams, bibliography, etc. – bulks large, but this work is more than technically competent. Its chief merit is its lively feeling for rhetoric: this is displayed not only in comment on the oratory as such, but also in the discussion of textual and exegetical points,; and it rightly expands into the province of historiography and history. The results are regularly illuminating. (…) Indeed, if there is to be progress in the understanding of the historian’s art and thought as a speech-writer, it will surely be made through this kind of minute, but also thoughtful, coherent, and sustained analysis.' (C.W. MACLEOD in The Classical Review (New Series), 1979, p.143).
