Polybios, die na de Romeinse overwinning op de Macedonische koning in 168 v. Chr. als gijzelaar werd meegenomen naar Rome, heeft zijn leven gewijd aan de vraag hoe de Romeinen in korte tijd een wereldrijk hebben kunnen vestigen. In veertig boeken behandelt hij op basis van gesprekken met ooggetuigen en schriftelijke bronnen de geschiedenis van het Middellandse Zeegebied tussen 220 en 145 v. Chr., een geschiedenis die hij zelf deels heeft meegemaakt (hij was bijvoorbeeld in 146 bij de verwoesting van Carthago). Ongeveer een derde is over. Zowel de uitgave als de vertaling zijn voorbeeldig. Kassies geeft het lastige Grieks van Polybios in soepel Nederlands weer en leidt zijn vertaling in met een informatieve beschouwing over Polybios en (de grillige overleveringsgeschiedenis van) zijn werk.
