DALE, F.R., and G.G. HENDERSON,
Paginae Primae. A First Latin Course.
Blackie & Son, London / Glasgow, n.d. 152p. Original brown cloth. Liibrary sticker to tail spine. Library stamps on first pages. (Rare). 'This is not a Direct Method book: for the high adventure of the Direct Method there are already excellent courses written. This book works through translation both ways. It is intended to lead the beginner to the stage when simple texts will be read (...). The Grammar given on the left is put to use immedeiately in the exercises given on the right. (...) The main attack on on the Latin Verb, not forgetting the Nominative and Accusative. The Grammar will, of course, be learned thoroughly, though it will often be applied before it is thoroughly known: for the necessary constant revision the pages added at the end of the book will be found useful. (...) It is hoped that the beginner will learn from the first to grasp the phrase or sentence as a whole, and will have plenty of oral practice, with or without translation (...). This should prevent the language being at any stage a 'dead' language: and it is hoped that as the reading matter becomes more important nobody will be miserable about that.' (F.R. DALE and G.G. HENDERSON in the Preface, pp.V-VI).
