LENDON, J.E.,
Het lied van de wrok. Athene vs. Sparta, 431-421 v.Chr. Vertaald door C. van den Berg en C. Kloos.
Ambo, Amsterdam, 2011. 567p. Black gilt titled hard bound with pictorial dust wrps. Lower part back dust wrps slightly creased and with remains of sticker. Stil a nice copy. ' Like all L.'s books, 'Song of Wrath' is an enjoyable read. It retells the story of the outbreak and first ten years of the Peloponnesian War with obvious relish - here is a historian who takes pleasure in crafting a diverting narrative, and we should all be grateful. (...) This vivid and entertaining narrative has a serious scholarly purpose. L. wishes to overturn the theories usually advanced to explain the origin ot the war and the peculiar strategies of its opening years. (...) L.'s position is bolstered by a very thorough knowledge of the events of the conflict and the decades that preceded it. He keeps details of scholarly wrangling to the endnotes (...) it is all there: he shows ready knowledge of the standard modern histories and commentaries and repeatedly cites important new studies from as recently as 2010. He offers convincing solutions to some well-known academic tangles (...). (...) That no one theory can perfectly explain every moment in the complex dance that led to the Peloponnesian War is no criticism of L, who has written nog only an effective, entertaining narrative of the war's beginnings but a powerful interpretation of the fundamental logic driving it and its peculiar strategies - an interpretation historians would do well to take very seriously.'
