BRUNHÖLZL, F.,
Geschichte der lateinischen Literatur des Mittelalters. Erster Band. Von Cassiodor bis zum Ausklang der karolingischen Erneuerung.
Wilhelm Fink Verlag, München, 1975. X,594p. Original blue cloth with dust wrps. Dust wrps a bit damaged. Else fine. ‘The author indicates in the preface that he proposes neither a ‘Handbuch’ nor the pursuit of an original, idiosyncratic idea or eccentric schema, but a simple presentation of the data and currents of literary history. (…) A brief introductory chapter presents various basic ideas and concepts that provide a needed orientation for those not familiar with medieval Latin, and concludes with a schema of periodisation (…). The volume is then divided into two books: ‘Die Literature der Übergangszeit von der Mitte des sechsten bis ins späte achte Jahrhundert’ and ‘Die Grundlegung Europas in der Karolingerzeit. The first book is divided along geographical lines. (…) The second book is divided into two chapters only, one on the renewal of learning under Charlemagne, and a second on the consolidation and dissemination of the fruits of the renewal after the death of Charlemagne. (…) The volume will not satisfy the simple, basic requirements of the beginner, nor will it ease the work of the scholar who seeks a handy repository of exhaustive information. On the other hand, a real literary history of medieval Latin is a worthy contribution. Professor Brunhölzl is to be congratulated on his efforts so far, and to be wished the continuing health and energy to complete his subsequent volumes. (DANIEL J. SHEERIN in Speculum, 1979, pp.554-555). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux.
