In de Constitutie spreekt Plato een vernietigend oordeel uit over de hele Griekse samenleving. De centrale vraag in het boek is hoe je als individu het beste kan leven. Het antwoord op deze vraag is zowel politiek als psychologisch. Constitutie draait om de tegenstelling tussen een maatschappelijke carrière (het leven van ‘de echte man’) en een theoretisch bestaan aan de zijlijn (de ‘vlucht’). De emotionele toon van het boek maakt duidelijk dat het hier om een persoonlijk dilemma van Plato ging. Plato had zelf voor de wetenschap gekozen en moest deze in zijn tijd onmaatschappelijke en in zijn milieu minderwaardige keus tegenover zijn familie en kennissen rechtvaardigen. En vooral tegenover zichzelf: Plato’s verzameld werk is één groot gesprek van de ziel met zichzelf. Die rechtvaardiging van zijn onmaatschappelijkheid heeft de vorm van een aanval op de maatschappij gekregen, dat wil zeggen op de door hem verafschuwde democratische Atheense samenleving waarin hij geen rol kan of wil spelen, en vooral op de ongeremde psychische toestand die naar zijn idee door de democratie in de hand wordt gewerkt. A focus upon the politics of reputation in those communities provides a striking contrast to the picture painted by the legislation and the writings of Rome's literate elite: when viewed from the point of view of the peasantry, issues such as the Christianization of the countryside, the emergence of new types of patronage relations, and the effects of the new system of taxation upon rural social structures take on a different aspect.
