CLAUSEN, W.,
Vergil's Aeneid. Decorum, Allusion, and Ideology.
Saur, Münchn, 2002. VIII,255p. Original grey cloth. Series: Beiträge zur Altertumskunde, Band 162. C.’s book is actually a (very substantial) revision of his 1987 ‘Vergil’s Aeneid and the Tradition of Hellenistic Poetry, in it’s turn a collection of his 1982 Sather Lectures, and one of the most important contributions to the study of the intertextual relationship between Virgil and Apollonius. (…) The change in C.’s title is a reflection of the fact that this new version of his book is actually an entirely new work. Of the six original chapters, the first (‘A New Poet’s Education’) has been removed, and three unpublished chapters have been added. Again there is a series of short appendices: of the eleven originals, five have disappeared (…), and two new ones have been added (…). But also the material preserved from the old version has been subjected to a detailed revision: C. Has updated the bibliography, has substantially rewritten and reorganised the footnotes, and also has revised his argumentation, both from a stylistic point of view and by the addition of a multitude of new points and new observations. (…) The new version of C.’s ‘Virgil’s Aeneid’, with the modification of its title, apparently attenuated the emphasis on the specifically Hellenistic nature of the ‘Aeneid’, even if in fact C.’s attention to Alexandrian intertextuality in Virgil’s poem is always constant. (…) Chs 1 and 5 are dedicated to Virgil’s ‘narrative ‘decorum’ (…). The revival proposed by C. Of the ancient interpretative category of narrative decorum, rather neglected by modern commentators, shows itself to be a very productive idea.’ (SERGIO CASALI in The Journal of Roman Studies, 2003, pp.368-370).
