He is also notorious as the most ribald poet of the classical world. Too few people know his more extended epigrams, which give an unrivalled picture of daily life in the first century AD. Peter Porter began translating Martial in 1963 and has already published highly praised versions of some of the epigrams in his earlier books, Poems Ancient and Modern, and The Last of England. To those he has added thirty-two new translations to make up his collection. All the epigrams here are Martial's in subject matter and spirit, but each is a naturalized English poem in its own right. The gallery of types - poseurs, gluttons, randy girls, sententious poets, cconniving servants - is as true of modern england and America as it was of Domitian's rome. Though these translations take too many liberties to be calles scholarly, they were written out of love of their great originator, and as a tribute to his abiding genius.
