HENKE, R., Studien zum Romanushymnus des Prudentius. Peter Lang, Frankfurt am Main (...), 1983. 185p. Sewn. Pages yellowed and some rust stained due to paper quality. Reasable pencil markings and some annotations. §§'H.'s study of Pe 10 helps to fill a significant gap in Prudentian scholarship, in which the Peristephanon Liber in general has been neglected as the subject of detailed consideration. The poet's treatment of martyrdom with all its emphasis on the gruesome details of torture and death can appear excessive and monotonous to the modern reader and has elicited negative judgments for the poems from many critics. H. goes a long way towards correcting this superficial view by explaining these features in Pe 10 in terms of their relation to the contemporary theology of martyrdom. They must be understood in a strictly Christian perspective. (...) H. has raised questions which are vital for a truer understanding not only of Pe 10 but alos of the whole Peristephanon Liber. It is heartening to see such a thorough beginning to more work on this fascinating Collection.' (A.-M. PALMER in The Classical Review (New Series), 1984, pp.327-328). € 20.00 (Antiquarian)
