  • Die Orakelkritik des Kynikers Oenomaus. Athenäum, Frankfurt am Main, 1988. 328p. Hard bound. Series: Beiträge zur klassischen Philologie, Band 188. 'Hammerstaedt’s monograph presents the sixteen surviving fragments of Oenomaus’ ‘goeton phora’ (…) and one further unassigned fragment from Julian, together with extensive commentary, four appendixes on particular textual difficulties, bibliography, list of variant readings, concordance of oracles, and indexes of quotations and proper names. There is much here to be welcomed. H. and his publishers have performed a real service in making the fragments of Oenomaus available in an accessible form (…). Good use has been made of editorial work on Eusebius to present the text of the fragments in a more informative way than has been done before. And the notes too contain much useful matter: H. has worked his way very carefully through the wording and thought of the fragments, and in many places succeeds in correcting lax or mistaken interpretations on the part of his predecessors; his discussion of textual problems are full if not always decisive; he is assiduous in his collection of parallel passages; and he has made good use of recent work on Delphic and other oracles. It is all the more to be regretted that the overall impression given is that of a study released prematurely, and therefore failing to be as useful or as elegant as it could have been.’ (M.B. TRAPP in The classical Review (New Series), 1990, pp.18-19). € 20.00 (Antiquarian) ISBN: 9783610090135
