ANDERSEN, Ø., Im Garten der Rhetorik. Die Kunst der Rede in der Antike. Original title: I Retorikkens Hage, 1985. Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt, 2001. 335p. Original off-white cloth with dust wrps. Nice copy. ‘In the ‘Einführung: An der Gartenpforte’ Andersen first explains the title of his book. (…) Of more interest is his discussion of possible ways of representing the garden of rhetoric: in a historical way (G.A. Kennedy (…); systematically (R. Volkmann (….), J. Martin (…); through its terminology (J.C.Th. Ernesti); and, finally, the fourth possibility of treating rhetoric in arrangement by topics and problems (‘nach thematischen, problemorientierten Aspekten’). (…) A. has opted for the fourth line of approach, (…) and it appears that ‘Im Garten der Rhetorik’ is relatively novel in its set-up, even compared to modern introductions. (…) The organisation of the book after the introductory chapter is as follows: in eight chapters A. treats Rhetorical Communication, Language and Style, Orality, Rhetorical Argumentation, Rhetoric and Philosophy as Subject of Education, Ethical Problems and Perspectives, Rhetoric, Pedagogy and Culture, Rhetoric and Society, and at the end he has a ‘Schlussbetrachtung beim Verlassen des Gartens’. (…) The whole system of rhetorical theory gets proper discussion, and at the same time each part (…) is put into the right perspective or context. (…) A. mainly bases his exposition on Aristotle’s Rhetoric, Cicero’s rhetorical writings and Quintillian’s handbook, and he is not much concerned with ‘Quellenforschung’. His main concern is to find out what is typical fororators and the art of rhetoric. On the other hand, any student starting with reading about rhetoric will not only learn a lot about this system but also become aware of its connections with many aspects of ancient life, society and thought. But also for the student of ancient rhetoric who is already well versed in the subject, A.’s method brings out interesting points and insights.’ (DIRK M. SCHENKEVELD in Gnomon, 2004, pp.263-264). € 35.00 (Antiquarian)
