  • Septimus Severus. The African Emperor. Routledge, London, 1988. Rev.ed. XII,292p. ills. Paperback. Nice copy. ‘In this revised edition of his 1972 biography of Septimus Severus, Birley has made use of recent archaeological and papyrological discoveries germane to his subject, and has augmented the bibliographies, which are subdivided by chapter, to incorporate works up to 1988. Of the two appendices, the first, ‘Ancient Evidence on Modern Scholarship’, which is new, offers much needed discussion of the problematical primary sources for Severan history and is particularly welcome; while the second, an expanded account of the family of Septimus, is presented with clarity and elegance. The book remains, however, essentially the same: a carefully crafted, linear historical narrative that chronicles the rise, reign, and demise of the emperor from Lepcis. The first half provides a detailed backdrop to Septimus’ earlier career; the second describes his activities as emperor (primarily military), and briefly summarizes the aftermath of his rule.’ (PATRICIA A. CLARK in The International History Review, 1990, p.127). From the library of Prof. Carl Deroux. € 25.00 (Antiquarian) ISBN: 9780415165914
