'Pacuvius, Marcus (c.220-130 B.C.), stage poet and painter of South Italian birth, nephew and pupil of Quintus Ennius. Titles of 13 tragedies of the Attic type (a.o.: Atalanta, Hermiona, Medus, Periboea, Teucer, Thyestes) are transmitted. The themes of 8 relate to the Trojan War. Several plots seem to have come from post-Euripidean pieces. In the 1st century he was regarded as the greatest of the Latin tragic poets.
