BERK, L., Epicharmus. (With a Summary in English). Wolters, Groningen, 1964. VII,163p. Theses. Sewn. With letter from W.J. Verdenius to J.(Johannes) van Leeuwen loosely inserted. Diss. Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht. (Rare). 'This dissertation is a methodical examination of Epicharmus' life and the surviving fragments. Since many of these are preserved because they happen to have illustrated for a late grammarian some feature of Sicilian diet or dialect, it is difficult to be sure that they give a fair reflection of their author, and because of their brevity many are impossible to interpret. Dr. Berk is well aware of these problems, and so is obliged to express himself with great caution throughout the book. In general the argument is clear and sensible (...). The chapter on the philosophical fragments is likely to be useful to any future editor; it suggests that in the past the line has not always been correctly drawn between the spurious and the genuine; the same applies to the proverbs and gnomic utterances. The most important points in each chapter are indicated in the English summary.' (N.G. WILSON in The Classical Review (New Series), 1968, p. 234). € 25.00 (Antiquarian)
