ARISTOPHANES, Lysistrata. An English version by D. Fitts. Faber and Faber, London, n.d.. XVI,132p. Cloth wrps. Wrps a bit worn. Upper edge a bit foxed. Cloth a bit stained. Initials WGA on free endpaper. 'In diction Fitts's intention was 'first and foremost, to be 'sayable': and the translation is neat and lively, though it does not rise to nobility of utterance with the original. He shows much acuteness in making Aristophanes' vulgarity palatable to the modern reader without simple excision; but he commits some depressing lapses in taste by translating into vulgar language passages where it is most conspicuously absent from the original.' (D. MERVYN JONES in The Classical Review (New Series), 1956, p.164). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott. € 10.00 (Antiquarian)
