'For a nominal subscription as a student associate I was able to use the libraries of the Royal African Society and the Royal Asiatic Society on Saturday mornings, where I had access to foreign periodicals, including the marvellous 'Anthropos'. The biblical translations and texts published in 'Anthropos' enabled me to get the hang of the working of many languages, especially in New Guinea, about which there was no information in Codrington of in Ray's 'Melanesian Island Languages'. This activity was concentrated in the holidays and some parts of some weekends, so there was no direct conflict with schoolwork. If it had been possible for me to take a first degree in linguistics at Oxford or Cambridge (...) that would have been my aim. It would have been a bad mistake. I would not have been much good at fieldwork, because my ear is not discriminating enough, nor would i have enjoyed the physical conditions in which fieldwork is conducted. Theoretical linguistics has never interested me much except in so far as it impinges on comparative and historical linguistics; my attempts to read Chomsky are enfeebled by the rapid onset of boredom, because for me constant change and the instability of rules are the essential features of language.'
