DAY, J., and M. CHAMBERS, Aristotle's History of the Athenian Democracy. University of California Press, Berkeley / Los Angeles, 1962. XIII,221p. Sewn. Edges bit foxed. Small personal library mark and name on free endpaper. This volume 'sets out to solve the problem of authorship and lay the basis for an assessment of the historical value of much which is found in the treatise 'Athenaion Politeia'. (...) The writing is good, lively, and stimulating; the printing is excellent; and a select biography, short appendixes, and an index round off the volume efficiently. (...)' I have 'serious doubts about the general hypotheses on which this introductory volume is based. The later chapters go into more detail and five summaries of the authors' view about the true nature of the Cleisthenic democracy (...) and the fourth of extreme democracy. They contain a lot of interesting comment, and there is much that will stimulate the reader.' (N.G.L. HAMMOND in The Classical Review (New Series), 1964, pp.35-37). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover. € 21.50 (Antiquarian)
