  • Monuments Illustrating New Comedy. Institute of Classical Studies, University of London, 1961. 273,VIp. ills.(24 B&W photographs on 6 plates). Sewn. Some rust stains. Series: Bulletin Supplement No. 11.'At last the catalogues which Professor Webster has been preparing for several years, and which scholars were eagerly awaiting, are now fully in print. The monuments illustrating Comedy (Old, Middle, and New) are much more numerous than those illustrating Tragedy and Satyr-play (the proportion being 4:1) and are distributed over a much longer period. (...) Vol. II (New Comedy) is naturally the richtest, and extends down to the third century A.D. Within the chronological arrangement adopted for Comedy ( a classification which will please historians of literature) an arrangement by localities is also offered (this will appeal to archeologists). The chief instrumental value of these catalogues lies in the fact that they enable the researcher to establish 'what masks and costumes were current at any particular time or in any particular place': this archaeological typology is a welcome parallel to the literary typology (...).' (GIUSEPPE GIANGRANDE in The Classical Review (New Series), 1963, pp.30-31). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott. € 25.00 (Antiquarian)
