GAUNT, D.M., Surge and Thunder. Critical Readings in Homer's Odyssey. Oxford University Press, London (...), 1971. XXII,120p. Paperback. Nice copy. 'The book gives an interpretation of parts of Homer's Odyssey for the benefit of the Greekless readers. The Introduction contains background information about the nature and special characteristics of oral poetry. The bulk of the book consists of twenty passages in the author's prose translation: each is followed by an Appreciation which seeks to convey to the reader the sensations which a competent Greek scholar might have on reading the original text. These studies in depth should help the reader toweards a better understanding of the poem as a whole. There is a guide to pronunciation of proper names and a full Index of literary topics. (Publisher' information). 'A critic of style must expect close scrutinity himself. Gaunt's own manner is spare and reticent; he is also very clear. He restrains his own enthousiams for Homer and, by saving his space, contrives to make a surprisingly large number of points.' (J.B. HAINSWORTH in The Classical Review (New Series), 1973, p.268). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott. € 12.00 (Antiquarian)
