MÜLLER, D.,
Topographischer Bildkommentar zu den Historien Herodots. Kleinasien und angrenzende Gebiete mit Südostthrakien und Zypern.
Wasmuth, Tübingen, 1997. 1031p. Richly ills. (line drawings and B&W photographs). Folding plate. Cloth wrps. Slipcase. ‘This is the second volume of Muller’s pictorial commentary on Herodotus. (…) This one covers modern Turkey and Cyprus, with a small number of sites in south-eastern Bulgaria. The commentary aims to discuss every site mentioned in Herodotus’ ‘Histories’, including not only settlements, but also rivers, mountains and wider regions. There is a standard format for items, slightly improved from vol.1: the name as found in Herodotus, along with the modern name, is followed usually by a brief definition. Then the relevant passages of Herodotus are given in German, followed by a discussion of the place and a bibliography divided into three sections: references in other ancient authors, epigraphic, papyrological and numismatic evidence, and modern discussions. Almost every entry is accompanied by black-and-white photographs, and maps and site-plans are included where appropriate. (…) The quality of the photographs is generally excellent, and the work as a whole is a valuable contribution to Herodotean studies.’ (HUGH BOWDEN in The Journal of Hellenic Studies, 1999,p.204).
